In Luke 12:48 Jesus says, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, even more will be expected.” What does that mean exactly? What are God’s expectations of you relative to how much you’ve been given?
Scripture is full of details and examples:
Whoever heard me spoke well of me, and those who saw me commended me, because I rescued the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had no one to assist them. The one who was dying blessed me; I made the widow’s heart sing. I put on righteousness as my clothing; justice was my robe and my turban. I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame. I was a father to the needy and examined took up the case of the stranger. I broke the fangs of the unrighteous and snatched the victims from their teeth.
Job 29:11-17
Oh, the joys of those who are considerate of the poor! The Lord saves them when they are in trouble. The Lord protects them and preserves them; they are counted among the blessed in the land. He doesn’t give them over to the desire of their enemies. The Lord sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness.

Proverbs 23:4-5
If you do nothing in a difficult time, your strength is small. Rescue those being taken off to death; save those stumbling toward slaughter. If you say, “But we didn’t know about this,” won’t he who weighs hearts perceive it? Won’t he who protects your life know? Won’t he repay a person according to his work?
Proverbs 24:10-12
Whoever increases wealth by taking interest or profit from the poor amasses it for someone who is kind to the poor.

Isn’t this is the kind of fasting I want: Breaking the chains of wickedness, untying the ropes of the yoke, setting the oppressed free, and tearing off every yoke? Isn’t it to share your food with the hungry, to bring the poor and homeless into your house, to clothe the naked when you see him, and not to hide from your relatives?

John answered, “If you have two shirts, give one to someone who has none. And anyone who has food should do the same.”
Luke 3:8-11
Don’t strive for what you should eat and what you should drink, and don’t be anxious. These things dominate the thoughts of the unbelieving world, but your Father already knows you need them. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need. Don’t be afraid, little flock, because it gives your Father great happiness to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to those in need. Make money-bags for yourselves that won’t wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where no thief can steal it and no moth can destroy it.

It’s not that there should be relief for others and hardship for you, but it’s a matter of equality. The goal is fairness, as it is written: “The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.”
2 Corinthians 8:13-15
The point is this: The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or under pressure, since God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work. As it is written: “He distributed freely; he gave to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.”

1 John 3:17
“Who then is the faithful and wise manager the master will put in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? Blessed is the servant the master finds doing his job when he returns. Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
“Suppose, though, that the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and then begins beating the other servants, partying, and getting drunk. That servant’s master will come on a day when he doesn’t expect him and at a time he’s not aware of. The master will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
“The servant who knows the master’s will and doesn’t get ready or doesn’t do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. But the one who doesn’t know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows.
From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, even more will be expected.
Luke 12:42-48
“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; inherit the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
“He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.
